How To Stay Safe On Your Bike
Every year, in the US alone, around 700 people lose their lives in bike accidents. Thousands more are injured many of them seriously. Fortunately, the number of people dying and being injured in this way is decreasing. However, if you ride a bike you do need to be aware of the danger and take steps to keep yourself safe. Here are a few of the most important of the steps you need to take.
Wear a safety helmet
A surprising number of people still do not do this. Bicycle helmets are a very effective way of protecting yourself against head injuries.
Wear reflective clothing
One of the biggest causes of cycling accidents is other road users not seeing the bike rider. Reflective clothing glows in the dark and is bright enough to be seen during the day too.
Whilst riding it is important for you to focus, doing so is the best way to stay safe. It is not a good idea to listen to music or talk on your phone while riding. Your ears protect you as much as your eyes.
Fit mirrors to your bike
If you ride on the road, fitting mirrors to your bike will allow you see trouble before it gets to you. However, do not forget to look over your shoulder as normal before carrying out a manoeuvre.
